Post-Production, Budget, and Fundraising:
Two independent journeys across 35-states and Ontario, Canada transpired over a year period. The first during September-October 2014 when 74 interviews with meteorologists, storm chasers, and the general public were recorded. The second trip was established to complete bypassed regions and interview subjects, was completely funding utilizing a meager GoFundMe campaign. Travel was active from late July through early September 2015. In total, 112 interviews have been assembled for this project, independently. This equates up to approximately 250 hours of on-camera interview material. Thousands of hours of original motion picture film, videotape, and audio tape were donated for use with the project as well. Furthermore, slides/35mm photographs, original artwork, and text documents contributed to the project also make up the base material for this project. At this time, all post-production costs are out-of-pocket.
The entire pre-production budget raised through the successful Kickstarter campaign in July 2014 was utilized for vehicle rental, fuel, equipment, occasional lodging, and meals (outlined below). Upon adding up every receipt, only $25 was spent over the original $7000 proposed to make this a reality. The remaining $2,262.64 was used for early post production costs, and to off-set a lack of consistent income during the transition to freelance/contract-based work.
This project remains an independent effort presently, with no staffing or direct financial assistance short of what I can independently generate through independent contract employment, or sporadic donations.
Anticipated release of this documentary will be presented in two parts. One, a condensed premiere, which has continued to have a free-flowing deadline of late 2015, yet more likely will be early 2016. The second, a six-part (six-hour) anthology series with a release date to be determined. Backers at specific levels to the original Kickstarter campaign will receive a copy of the six-part Anthology series, upon completion. As previously noted, in time Anthology would be pitched to broadcast/cable networks, film festivals, and video on-demand streaming services relating to history, science, and extreme weather.
A change from the original Kickstarter campaign assumption that “digital previews” would be available at certain points. As I independently work from segment to segment, in short bursts, it’s better to provide composite compilation previews, as the flow frequently changes over time. With that said, digital previews will continue to be posted over the course of post-production, but not in any consistent fashion. Note that various edits will change with time, and digital previews/or early cuts may not reflect the final product (although will follow a similar theme).
Specific musical selections for Anthology have yet to be determined. It is very likely that original compositions from independent composers/musicians would be the ideal path to take for incorporating a soundtrack to the documentary. Additional post production funds would be allocated towards the aspect of music production and/or rights.
Stock Video Rights:
The vast majority of imagery incorporated into the documentary was shot directly by the producer (Blake Naftel), coupled with a large amount of donated material free-of-charge (with credit and copies of the completed project provided to contributing parties). In the case of specific parties requiring financial licensing of multimedia material, additional funding would be allocated towards this. As various producers/stock agencies charge different rates, a conservative estimate will be applied, baring necessity of said material.
Updates, including selections from various interviews gathered during the September-October 2014 time frame will be made available via this website, and various social media (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram). These updates will be located in the “news” section.
Thank you for the continued interest and support of this project!

Where did the Kickstarter Funds Go?
Pre-Production Travel & Production Cost, Expenditures, July-December 2014:
Fuel, lodging, and pre-production costs were estimated amounts applied to the 46-day travel period across the continental United States. The time frame originally funded was for sit-down video/or audio interviews with storm chasers and meteorologists spread across the United States and Canada. Travel distance was also factored in as many individuals resided great distances from each another. Fuel costs were originally estimated using GasBuddy.com while driving a 2009 Subaru Forrester with 2.5L V6 engine. Fuel cost was actually lower than expected, as the vehicle utilized for all pre-production travel was a 2014 Chevy Cruze, a rental vehicle from Avis. Original lodging costs were estimated using the Rome2Rio.com trip estimator.
The rental 2014 Chevy Cruze, courtesy of Avis, was utilized for the 10,236 mile round-trip through 26 states and Southern Ontario, Canada.
